Yet a 1997 a report by the NRC said the agency never requiredutilities to take into account the worst-case scenario involving a jetliner crash like the ones that occurred at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11. "If an airliner crashed into a cask, there could be some localized impacts", According to the report prepared by the N.R.C. by Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1997, the NRC said that a worse case scenario involving a huge radiation release from a spent fuel storage facility could result in 16,800 deaths within a 50 mile radius of the plant and 28,900 deaths within 500 miles. Greenville is about 35 miles from the plant. It would also result in billions in damage and would condemn 156 square miles within a 50 mile radius of the plant and188 square miles or 500 miles away, according to the NRC report."With this spent fuel, you could get a lethal dose in a matter of minutes, said Lou seller of the nuclear watchdog group, the Blue Ridge Environment Defense League. NRC spokesman Ken Clarke said spent fuel, in 18 ton storage canisters, one and one half stories and half the size of a football field, is stored 25 feet underground in 5 foot thick steel reinforced concrete containers in heavy concrete pools. "They have always been considered adequate to protect public health and safety", Clark said. Still, because of the September 11^th. attacks, the NRC has ask the power companies to take another look at the strength of containment facilities and to increase security by hiring more manpower or asking local police, state police or, the National Guard for help if needed.
